Don't Let AI Lead You Into VAT Filing Penalties

HMRC warns businesses about misleading VAT deadline advice

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly popular for answering business questions, but recent reports suggest that some AI-generated guidance is contributing to a rise in late VAT return submissions and payments.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has issued a reminder to VAT-registered businesses that statutory VAT filing and payment deadlines do not change when they fall on a weekend or bank holiday.

Many businesses mistakenly assume that deadlines are automatically extended to the next working day. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

VAT Return Filing Deadlines

HMRC's online systems are available for submitting VAT returns on weekends and bank holidays. If your business is unable to file on those days, your return must be submitted by the last working day before the deadline.

HMRC has confirmed that weekends and bank holidays will not be accepted as valid reasons for late filing.

VAT Payment Deadlines

The same principle applies to VAT payments. Where a payment deadline falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the funds must reach HMRC's bank account by the previous working day, unless your bank supports faster payments that clear on non-working days.

Avoid Unnecessary Penalties

Late VAT returns and payments can lead to interest charges and penalties, making it essential to have robust systems and reminders in place to ensure deadlines are met.

While AI can be a useful starting point for general information, it should never replace professional tax advice. VAT rules can be complex, and relying on inaccurate guidance can prove costly.
