HMRC Introduces GOV.UK One Login: What It Means for Taxpayers

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has begun rolling out GOV.UK One Login for new users signing up to its digital services.
This marks the start of a longer-term move towards a single, simplified login system for accessing government services.
What is changing?
If you are registering for HMRC services for the first time, you will now use an email-and-password login through GOV.UK One Login.
This replaces the need to create a traditional Government Gateway ID, which has historically been required to access HMRC systems.
Does this affect existing users?
At this stage, the change only applies to new HMRC users.
If you already have a Government Gateway account:
You do not need to take any action yet
You should continue using your existing login details as normal
Even if you already use GOV.UK One Login for other government services, you will still need your Government Gateway credentials to access HMRC services for the time being.
What happens next?
HMRC plans to introduce GOV.UK One Login more widely over time and will contact existing users when it is time to transition.
The long-term aim is to create a single login for all government services, including:
Filing tax returns
Managing personal tax affairs
Accessing other services such as passport applications
In the short term, the impact is minimal - particularly for existing users.
However, over time, this change is expected to:
Simplify access to HMRC services
Reduce the number of login credentials required
Improve the overall user experience
As with any system changes, there may be an adjustment period, particularly when the transition is extended to existing users.
Our view
This is part of a broader move towards digitalisation and simplification across government services.
While the change is gradual, it’s another reminder of the importance of keeping your digital access details secure and up to date - particularly with further changes such as Making Tax Digital also on the horizon.
At SJC, Chartered Accountants we’re here to support you with accessing HMRC systems and managing your tax affairs efficiently.
