The first deadline under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is fast approaching, and affected taxpayers should start preparing now to avoid a last-minute rush.
If you're self-employed or receive income from property, and your qualifying income exceeded £50,000 during the 2024/25 tax year, you are likely to have joined the MTD for Income Tax regime from 6 April 2026.
First MTD Deadline: 7 August 2026
Under the new rules, eligible taxpayers must:
Keep digital accounting records.
Use HMRC-compatible software.
Submit income and expense updates to HMRC every quarter.
The first quarterly update for the 2026/27 tax year must be submitted by 7 August 2026.
Although this isn't a tax payment deadline, it is an important compliance requirement and forms part of the government's move towards a fully digital tax system.
Don't Leave It Until the Last Minute
Preparing your first quarterly submission may take longer than expected, particularly if you're still getting used to digital record keeping or new accounting software.
Leaving everything until the final few days increases the risk of delays, errors and unnecessary stress.
