More taxpayers are choosing to file early
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has reported a record start to the 2026/27 tax year, with almost 738,000 Self Assessment tax returns filed during April 2026 alone.
In the first week of the new tax year, 298,905 taxpayers had already submitted their 2025/26 tax returns, demonstrating a growing trend towards filing well ahead of the January deadline.
While the Self Assessment filing deadline is not until 31 January 2027, many taxpayers are recognising the advantages of getting their tax affairs organised early.
Why File Your Tax Return Early?
Filing your tax return as soon as you have the information you need can offer several important benefits.
Receive Tax Refunds Faster
If you are due a tax refund, submitting your return early allows HMRC to process your claim sooner, meaning you receive your money more quickly.
Avoid the January Rush
Every year, thousands of taxpayers leave their returns until the last minute, often creating unnecessary stress and increasing the risk of mistakes.
By filing early, you can avoid the pressure that comes with approaching deadlines and unexpected complications.
Know Your Tax Liability in Advance
Submitting your return early does not mean you have to pay your tax bill immediately.
Any tax due for the 2025/26 tax year will generally still be payable by 31 January 2027.
However, filing early gives you plenty of time to understand your liability and budget accordingly.
Time to Correct Errors
Completing your return ahead of the deadline allows time to review the information carefully and correct any mistakes before filing deadlines become a concern.
Useful Proof of Income
A completed and processed Self Assessment tax return can provide valuable evidence of income when applying for:
Mortgages
Loans and finance agreements
Rental properties
Certain benefits and support schemes
Having this documentation readily available can help speed up applications when needed.
Millions of Returns Still to Be Filed
Although April saw record filing numbers, HMRC expects more than 12 million Self Assessment tax returns to be submitted before the 31 January 2027 deadline.
If you are self-employed, a company director, landlord, or otherwise required to complete a tax return, now may be the ideal time to start gathering your records and preparing your return.
